Anniston, AL – Gadsden State Community College hosted a ribbon cutting and open house on Monday, April 27, at its Ayers Campus in Anniston to highlight the college’s Surgical Technology program and recent updates to its training facilities.
The event, held at 5 p.m., provided attendees with an opportunity to tour the program’s upgraded lab space, meet faculty and students, and learn more about educational pathways in the growing field of surgical technology.
The Surgical Technology program is designed to prepare students for essential roles in the operating room, where they assist surgeons, nurses and other healthcare professionals during procedures. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on, skills-based training aimed at meeting workforce needs across the region.
“This program represents Gadsden State’s continued commitment to providing high-quality, workforce-focused education,” said Alan Smith. “By expanding opportunities in health sciences, we are helping students prepare for meaningful careers while supporting the healthcare needs of our community. This program not only equips students with critical, hands-on skills, but also reflects the strong partnerships we have built with healthcare providers to ensure our training aligns with real workforce needs and industry standards.”
The open house welcomed members of the public, offering a closer look at the training environment and program expectations while giving prospective students insight into enrollment and career opportunities.
The ribbon cutting was part of a broader evening of activities on campus. At 6 p.m., Smith delivered a State of the College address in the Cheaha Lecture Hall, where he shared updates on enrollment growth, program expansion and recent achievements, emphasizing the institution’s continued development and regional impact.
