ANNISTON, AL — A piece of Anniston’s history is making way for the city’s future. Today, city crews began the careful demolition of the former Higginbotham Printing building, marking a significant step toward revitalization in Historic Downtown Anniston.

The demolition was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Richard Thompson, who donated the property to the city. Situated next to the soon-to-be-completed Chief Ladiga Trail and just steps from The City Market, the site is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting ecotourism and economic growth in downtown.

While time and deterioration made it impossible to save the aging structure, the city remains dedicated to preserving its legacy. Before demolition, the city’s communications team explored the site, salvaging memorabilia that tells the story of its past. Among the recovered items were family photos, historical documents, and records of the original cast-iron printing press that once shaped Anniston’s written history. Additionally, old high school yearbooks and a special Centennial booklet celebrating Anniston’s 100-year anniversary were discovered, serving as reminders of the generations who lived and worked within the building’s walls.

Application

As the city clears the way for new opportunities, officials are optimistic about the future. The legacy of Higginbotham Printing will not be forgotten, but rather honored as Anniston continues to evolve. With this transformation, a new chapter begins—one that promises a more connected and vibrant downtown for residents and visitors alike.
