Montgomery, AL – Last week, Secretary of State Wes Allen of Alabama signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry to cross-check the states’ voter files and identify individuals registered to vote in both states. This initiative aims to ensure voter integrity by removing potentially ineligible voters from the rolls in accordance with the National Voter Registration Act.
Louisiana is the sixth state to join the Alabama Voter Integrity Database (AVID), an initiative developed by Secretary Allen and his team. AVID serves as Alabama’s in-house solution for voter file maintenance, replacing the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), a private third-party group. Secretary Allen had pledged during his campaign to withdraw Alabama from ERIC and establish AVID as a state-based alternative.
“Ensuring the security of Alabama elections is a top priority. Proper voter file maintenance is the foundation of election integrity,” Allen stated. He emphasized the significance of AVID, noting that the system was developed with the goal of maintaining the cleanest and most accurate voter file in the country. “Because of AVID, Alabama voters can have confidence that their elections are fair, secure, and transparent,” he added.
Secretary Allen expressed gratitude to the staff of both the Alabama and Louisiana Secretary of State’s offices for their efforts in preparing the MOU. “Over 140,000 potentially ineligible voters have been identified through AVID thus far, and I look forward to seeing the progress that will be made through AVID’s sixth state partnership,” he said.
Alabama has also entered into MOUs with its border states and Arkansas, demonstrating a regional effort to enhance voter file accuracy and election integrity. The signed MOUs can be viewed here.
