Attorney General Marshall Hosts 25th Annual Law Enforcement Summit

Montgomery, AL – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall today led the 25th Annual Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Summit, held at the Church of the Highlands in Montgomery. The event provided continuing education training for law enforcement officers and attorneys across the state, focusing on advancements in forensic science, legal insights, and commemorating fallen officers.

The Summit featured presentations on cutting-edge topics such as forensic DNA testing, the use of investigative genetic genealogy, and key lessons from notable cases, including the Karen Read case. Participants were able to hear from law enforcement and legal experts, including Chief Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore, Dr. Jason Kokoszka from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, and co-hosts of The Prosecutors: A True Crime Podcast, Alice LaCour and Brett Talley.

“It is always a privilege to gather with law enforcement officers from across our state to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our communities,” said Attorney General Marshall. “The law enforcement summit provides officers and prosecutors a chance to fellowship with one another while working to sharpen our skills to better serve the people of Alabama.”

This year’s Summit also emphasized the Attorney General’s office’s dedication to key issues, including consumer protection enforcement, the fight against human trafficking, and efforts to combat abuse and exploitation in nursing homes. Notable presentations included Assistant Attorney General Michael Dean on consumer protection, Assistant Attorney General Bruce Liberman on Medicaid fraud, and Katie Beth McCarthy, coordinator for the Alabama Anti-Human Trafficking Alliance.

A significant part of the event was the memorial held for fallen officers, with a special commemoration for Deputy Sheriff Jermyius Young of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, who lost his life in the line of duty. Deputy Young, a United States Army Reserve veteran, had served with the sheriff’s office for two years and is remembered by his family, including his mother, father, and five siblings.

Reflecting on the Summit, Attorney General Marshall stated, “The Summit is like a family reunion. It’s an important occasion to reflect on the year behind us and look ahead to the future, as we dedicate ourselves behind a common mission: making Alabama the safest state in the nation.”

The annual event underscores the commitment of Alabama’s law enforcement and legal communities to advancing their knowledge and fostering cooperation to better serve and protect the public.
