Montgomery, AL – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has joined 19 other states in supporting the Trump administration’s efforts to investigate and eliminate federal waste, fraud, and abuse. The coalition, led by Iowa, has filed a legal brief opposing lawsuits that seek to restrict the administration’s access to government data for fraud detection.
The legal dispute centers on the administration’s initiative to identify and reduce financial inefficiencies within federal programs. According to estimates from the Biden administration, the federal government loses as much as $521 billion annually due to fraud. President Trump’s administration has sought to address this issue by directing executive branch agencies to investigate and cut improper expenditures. However, legal challenges have been filed opposing these measures, arguing that the administration’s approach oversteps legal and procedural boundaries.
Attorney General Marshall criticized the lawsuits, asserting that they obstruct efforts to reduce financial mismanagement. “The American people have been loud and clear: they want President Trump to cut waste, eliminate fraud, and protect their tax dollars,” Marshall stated. “Yet, the radical left is using the courts to shield corruption and obstruct the President’s efforts. These baseless lawsuits are nothing more than a last-ditch effort to preserve a broken system.”
The coalition argues that under Article II of the U.S. Constitution, the president has the authority to direct executive branch agencies. The states contend that these legal challenges interfere with the administration’s ability to enforce federal oversight.
The brief was filed by attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and led by Iowa. The case remains pending in federal court.
