Anniston, AL – Despite stormy skies, love and remembrance shone brightly in Anniston as the Alabama Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) held its annual Statewide Candlelight Vigil on Saturday evening. The ceremony, a deeply moving tribute to Alabama’s fallen law enforcement officers, took place at Centennial Memorial Park and was swiftly relocated to the Anniston Fire Department due to rain—thanks to the generosity and swift response of Chief Jeff Waldrep and his team.
Survivors, law enforcement officers, and community members gathered in solidarity to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The event featured a candle-lighting ceremony, the solemn presentation of the colors, the haunting sound of bagpipes, and powerful reflections on the enduring legacies of the officers lost.
Throughout the evening, emotions ran high as attendees shared stories of courage, love, and resilience. One of the most touching moments came when Lt. Brett Lloyd of the Anniston Police Department stepped in at the last minute to lead a heartfelt prayer. His words deeply moved the room and added a spiritual sense of unity to the night.
The dedication of the Alabama C.O.P.S. board was recognized and appreciated by all present. Their behind-the-scenes work continues to ensure that families of fallen officers feel seen, supported, and never alone. The organization plays a vital role in offering healing and remembrance through events like this one.
“This vigil reminds us of the importance of never forgetting the names, the stories, and the sacrifice behind the badge,” one attendee shared. “Heroes live forever in the hearts of those who remember them.”
Special thanks were extended to the Anniston Fire Department, whose swift hospitality allowed the evening to proceed seamlessly despite the inclement weather. Chief Waldrep’s willingness to open the fire station doors reflected the spirit of unity and community that defines this solemn annual gathering.
As candles glowed in memory of the fallen, the message was clear: though they may be gone, these heroes will never be forgotten.
