Alabama Companies Honored by Governor Kay Ivey for Global Export Achievements

Governor Ivey Celebrates Alabama’s Exporting Success with ‘Trade Excellence Awards,’ Proclaims World Trade Month

Montgomery, AL – Governor Kay Ivey celebrated the achievements of five Alabama companies today, recognizing their significant contributions to the state’s thriving exporting activities and economic growth. In a ceremony held this morning at the Old House Chamber in the State Capitol, Governor Ivey presented the 2024 Governor’s Trade Excellence Awards to leaders of these companies, showcasing their exemplary performance on the global stage. Additionally, Governor Ivey declared May as World Trade Month in the state of Alabama, emphasizing the importance of international commerce in driving prosperity.

“Alabama’s exports reached 190 countries last year, underscoring the strength of our ‘Made in Alabama’ brand worldwide,” stated Governor Ivey. “The exceptional companies honored today exemplify the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation that defines our state’s business landscape.”

The honored companies include:

– Evonik: A German company with operations in Mobile and Birmingham, specializing in specialty chemicals and medical device technology.
– Hartzell Engine Tech: A Montgomery-based firm providing engine accessories and heating solutions for the general aviation industry.
– MDT Armor: Located in Auburn, MDT Armor produces armored vehicles for military, law enforcement, and civilian applications globally.
– PTS Expeditionary Communications: A Huntsville company offering reliable and cost-effective products for expeditionary command posts.
– United Aero Group: Formerly known as Arista Air, the Enterprise-based operation specializes in maintaining and overhauling various helicopter types.

Furthermore, Governor Ivey recognized Nisa Miranda with the Trade Advocate of the Year Award for her dedicated support of the state export support system during her tenure as director of the University of Alabama Center for Economic Development.

Alabama’s exports have seen remarkable growth, surging 43% in value since 2020 and totaling $27.4 billion last year. Motor vehicles, chemicals, minerals, aerospace parts, and forest products are among the leading exports, with Alabama ranking as the top auto-exporting state in 2023.

Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, emphasized the importance of international trade for the state’s businesses, particularly small enterprises. With 95% of the world’s consumers outside the U.S., tapping into international markets is crucial for sustained growth and job creation.

Christina Stimpson, director of Commerce’s Office of International Trade, highlighted the role of the office in assisting Alabama companies in expanding into overseas markets through various resources and partnerships, including Export Alabama.

The recognition ceremony underscored Alabama’s commitment to fostering global commerce and supporting businesses in reaching new heights of success in international trade.
