Calhoun County, AL – The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) is the primary outreach and engagement organization for the land-grant mission of Alabama A&M University and Auburn University in cooperation with Tuskegee University. In Calhoun County the office is located at County Administration Building, 1702 Noble Street, Suite 108, Anniston, AL 36201. Their mission is, “Transforming lives through science-based information, practical solutions, and meaningful experiences.” Now many may ask exactly what this means to individuals in Calhoun County. The short answer is it means free fun and a lot of knowledge! Most recently the ACES held a Cucurbit Workshop & Watermelon Taste Test. This may sound like a fancy class, but it was an informative and tasty way to learn about watermelons and other vine growing plants. Participants got to understand how to grow watermelon and other cucurbits such as squash, melons, and cucumbers. They were advised on how to choose the right soil additives, choose the best location to plant, hydration, and seed choice. Participants were also given free tools to identify issues that may arise such as insects and plant viruses including learning about a free app called Farming Basics. The class ended with an amazing tasting of local watermelons. Pictures don’t do these watermelon justice! The sweet taste varied along with the texture and colors. The Calhoun County branch of ACES holds many events and offers many free resources. If you are growing plants in Calhoun County don’t forget this amazing resource. If you are even thinking about planting or interested in learning more look for the many classes and opportunities they offer.
