Alabama Launches STEM Council Seal of Approval for Out-of-School Programs and Events

Governor Ivey Announces Creation of ‘Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval,’ Calls for Applications

Montgomery, AL – Alabama has launched a new statewide recognition program aimed at identifying established, high-quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs and events for students.

Gov. Kay Ivey announced the Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval on Sept. 28 in partnership with the Alabama STEM Council and Alabama Department of Workforce. The initiative will recognize qualifying out-of-school STEM programs and recurring events operating across the state.

“Alabama’s continued success depends on preparing our young people with the skills and experiences they need to pursue the opportunities of tomorrow,” Ivey said. “The STEM Seal of Approval will help Alabama families identify outstanding programs while recognizing the organizations inspiring students to explore, learn and build bright futures right here in our state.”

According to the Governor’s Office, the Seal of Approval will use a peer-review process to evaluate STEM programs and events based on factors including demonstrated outcomes, consistent implementation and alignment with STEM education best practices. The designation is intended to give parents and guardians another way to identify established STEM learning opportunities available outside traditional classroom settings.

Applicants must represent a specific STEM program or recurring event rather than an entire organization. Eligible programs must be based in Alabama, have operated for at least three consecutive years and be offered through an out-of-school-time provider, such as an after-school program, community-based initiative, nonprofit organization or summer program.

Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed said the initiative is also intended to connect STEM education with the state’s workforce needs.

“High-quality STEM experiences help students connect what they learn with the businesses and industries driving Alabama’s economy,” Reed said. “By recognizing programs that consistently deliver meaningful results, the Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval will strengthen our workforce pipeline and encourage more young Alabamians to discover the many opportunities available to them.”

The application process asks organizations to provide information about their program’s learning objectives, academic and enrichment outcomes, participant feedback, college and career exploration opportunities, workforce alignment and methods used to collect and evaluate program data.

Programs and events selected through the review process will receive the official Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval designation as well as a physical award that can be displayed at the program’s location.

“The Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval represents a commitment to recognizing the programs that are truly moving the needle for students in Alabama,” Alabama STEM Council Acting Executive Director Cynthia McCarty said. “We encourage STEM providers across the state to apply and showcase the important work they are doing to engage and inspire the next generation.”

Applications opened Sept. 28. Award recipients will be announced following the review process, although a specific announcement date has not yet been provided.

Organizations can review eligibility requirements and application information through the Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval website.

The Alabama STEM Council works with educators, industry representatives, community leaders and state government to expand STEM education and career opportunities throughout Alabama. The council was established to advise state leaders on STEM education, career awareness and workforce development.
