Montgomery, AL – As warmer weather sweeps across Alabama, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) stands committed to promoting safety on the roads, particularly for motorcyclists and bicyclists. May marks National Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month, and ALEA is taking proactive steps to educate the public and encourage responsible road-sharing practices.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor emphasized the importance of heightened road safety awareness, stating, “Every year, Alabama’s roads welcome an increasing number of bicyclists and motorcyclists, enhancing the need for motorists to operate their vehicles with a heightened road-safety mindset.” He further stressed the significance of mutual respect and vigilance among all road users to ensure everyone’s safety.
The initiative kicked off with the recent Bo Bikes Bama event in Auburn, where troopers from the Highway Patrol Division, alongside officers from the Auburn Police Department, worked to ensure the safety of all participants. Throughout May, ALEA will continue its efforts with various educational initiatives aimed at reinforcing safe driving habits and reducing accidents involving motorcyclists and bicyclists.
Colonel Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), highlighted the shared responsibility for road safety. “This month, we aim to foster a safer environment for all road users by emphasizing respect and caution on our roads,” he stated. Colonel Archer urged all Alabamians to remain vigilant and mindful of the presence of motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
As part of the “Share the Road 24” Campaign, ALEA provided essential safety tips for motorists, motorcyclists, and bicyclists:
For Motorists:
– Always check mirrors and blind spots for motorcyclists and bicyclists.
– Maintain a safe following distance and be cautious at intersections.
– Give bicyclists at least three feet of clearance when passing.
For Motorcyclists and Bicyclists:
– Wear appropriate safety gear, including helmets.
– Use turn signals and remain visible with reflective clothing.
– Bicyclists must follow the same rules as slow-moving vehicles and yield to pedestrians.
