Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Reminds Alabamians of Upcoming REAL ID Deadline

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is reminding residents across the state that the REAL ID Act of 2005will officially go into effect on May 7, 2025. After this date, individuals planning to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities must present a REAL ID-compliant identification — such as a STAR ID in Alabama — or another federally approved form of ID like a U.S. passport.

Alabama began issuing STAR IDs in 2012, allowing residents ample time to prepare for the federal mandate. As the deadline draws near, ALEA officials are encouraging citizens to verify whether their license meets the federal standard and, if necessary, schedule appointments to obtain a STAR ID.

“Currently, citizens who fly domestic are able to use their regular driver licenses or other photo identity cards issued by their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to board a plane,” explained Holley Cook, Director of ALEA’s Driver License Division. “However, the REAL ID Act changes this. If you plan to use your state-issued ID or driver license to fly within the U.S., then it must be REAL ID compliant after May 7, 2025. In Alabama, the REAL ID is known as a STAR ID.”

Passed in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the REAL ID Act established stricter standards for identity verification in an effort to improve national security. While the STAR ID is optional, it becomes essential for anyone using their driver’s license to board domestic flights or enter secure federal buildings and military bases.

“If you don’t plan to fly or visit certain federal facilities, then a STAR ID is not necessary,” Cook added. “Your regular Alabama driver license will still be valid for driving, voting, and other everyday activities. It is completely up to the individual.”

ALEA is urging citizens to schedule appointments online in advance to avoid long wait times, especially in larger cities such as Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile, where appointment slots are filling quickly.

Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety, clarified that May 7 is simply the start of the federal enforcement period, not a final deadline to obtain a STAR ID.

“We ask everyone to use patience when visiting our offices,” Archer said. “You can still get your STAR ID after May 7 if you aren’t traveling right away.”

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor echoed the importance of preparation: “The STAR ID and the REAL ID Act ensure the safe and secure identification of not only Alabamians but citizens across the country. While the STAR ID is only one of several acceptable identification options, we strongly encourage individuals choosing to fly within the U.S. to take this step and obtain a STAR ID. Having a STAR ID well before your travel date will guarantee a smooth and worry-free experience.”

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I get my STAR ID?
You must visit an ALEA Driver License Exam Office in person with appropriate documents. An online guide is available at STAR ID Application Guide to assist with eligibility and required paperwork.

2. What if my name has changed?
If your legal name differs from what appears on your identity documents, you must present certified documents (e.g., marriage certificate, court order) to verify the change.

3. Can I make an appointment?
Yes. Schedule your appointment at ALEA’s Driver License Scheduling Site. Plan early, as appointments are in high demand in major cities.

4. How do I know if I already have a STAR ID?
Look for a gold star in the upper left corner of your Alabama driver license. If your ID says “Not for Federal Identification,” it is not a STAR ID.

5. Can I still get a STAR ID after May 7?
Yes. You can still apply for a STAR ID even after the enforcement date if needed.

6. Does my teen need a STAR ID to fly?
Children under 18 are not required to provide ID for domestic flights. However, STAR IDs may be issued to individuals 15 years and older.

7. What is the cost of a STAR ID?
The fee is $36.25, the same as a regular driver license. There is no additional charge if obtained during a standard license renewal.
