Gadsden, AL – In a move aimed at enhancing both recreation opportunities and educational resources, Alabama Power Co. has allocated $50,000 to Gadsden State Community College for the construction of a new walking and running trail along the perimeter of the Wallace Drive Campus, bordering the Coosa River.
Dubbed the Coosa River Trail at Gadsden State, this multi-purpose venue will serve as a recreational space open to College employees, students, and members of the community alike. It will offer opportunities for walking, running, and enjoying the surrounding natural environment. Future plans for the trail include the establishment of an outdoor classroom, providing educational opportunities for Gadsden State and public school students to study the local flora and fauna indigenous to the area.
Spencer Williams, community relations manager in Gadsden for Alabama Power, expressed excitement about the partnership with Gadsden State, emphasizing the company’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life and economic potential in the region.
The Coosa River Trail at Gadsden State will span up to 10 kilometers in length, making it suitable for cross-country racing. It will serve as the home base for the Gadsden State Cross Country Team, with hopes of attracting cross-country meets to Gadsden. Blake Lewis, Gadsden State Athletic Director, highlighted the economic benefits of hosting such events, citing the significant economic impact generated by cross-country meets in Huntsville.
Future plans for the trail include the installation of fiber optic cables for real-time video and scoring during races, enhancing both the racing experience and security monitoring capabilities.
Dr. Kathy Murphy, president of Gadsden State, emphasized the trail’s potential as a recruitment tool, drawing attention to the college’s affordability and educational offerings.
Elizabeth Wheatley, who secured the $50,000 donation through a grant, expressed anticipation for the project’s impact on campus activity and community engagement.
