Attorney General Marshall Welcomes Alabama Senate's Unanimous Adoption of Alabama Child Protection Act

Montgomery, AL – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has welcomed the Alabama Senate’s adoption of the Alabama Child Protection Act, marking it as a significant step forward in the state’s efforts to combat child sexual abuse material. The Act, known as House Bill 168, was carried in the Senate by Senator April Weaver (R-Brierfield) and passed unanimously.

The legislation, which expands the state’s ability to investigate and prosecute artificially-generated child sexual abuse material, garnered widespread bipartisan support. In February, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted the measure, sponsored by Representative Matt Woods (R-Jasper), paving the way for its progression through the legislative process.

Attorney General Marshall underscored the importance of the bill in addressing the growing threat posed by the rapid production and dissemination of child sexual abuse material facilitated by artificial intelligence. “Artificial intelligence delivers opportunities for productive innovation, but has and will be used by those seeking to do harm—particularly when it comes to the rapid production and dissemination of child sex abuse material,” stated Marshall.

With the passage of HB168, Alabama is poised to become a leader in the nation in protecting children from this distressing phenomenon. Marshall expressed gratitude for Representative Matt Woods’ leadership on the issue, emphasizing that the Act equips law enforcement and prosecutors with essential tools to combat these abhorrent crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.

The bill will now proceed to the Governor’s desk for her signature, marking the final step before it becomes law. The unanimous support for the Alabama Child Protection Act reflects the bipartisan commitment to safeguarding Alabama’s children and prosecuting those who seek to exploit and harm them.

As the state prepares to take this crucial step forward in its efforts to combat child sexual abuse, Attorney General Marshall reaffirmed his dedication to protecting Alabama’s most vulnerable citizens and ensuring that perpetrators of such heinous crimes face swift and decisive justice.
