Montgomery, AL – Alabama families and shoppers statewide are gearing up for the 19th annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, scheduled from July 19th to July 21st. This weekend-long event offers significant savings by waiving the state’s 4% sales tax on a variety of school-related items.
From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 19th, until midnight on Sunday, July 21st, Alabama will exempt the following from sales tax:
- Clothing: Each article priced at $100 or less.
- School Supplies: Individual items valued at $50 or less.
- Books: Each book costing $30 or less.
- Technology: Including tablets, laptops, computers, and printers priced at $750 or less.
More than 300 cities and counties across Alabama will also participate, further reducing local taxes in some areas up to 10%. This initiative not only supports families preparing for the upcoming school year but also boosts local economies by encouraging shopping at neighborhood businesses.
“This sales tax holiday offers parents a way to save on back-to-school needs while stimulating sales for stores across the state,” stated Rick Brown, President of the Alabama Retail Association. “It’s an opportunity for consumers to keep more money in their pockets, especially in the face of rising costs.”
Local businesses, such as The Name Dropper and Storkland in Montgomery, which face a 10% sales tax rate, eagerly anticipate the benefits of the tax-free weekend. “Every little bit helps with inflation, so 10% savings is pretty big,” noted Brian Schroll of The Name Dropper.
Governor Kay Ivey emphasized the broader community impact, stating, “This is tax relief at the perfect time for parents as they prepare for a new school year.” She encouraged all Alabamians to take advantage of the savings on essential items like school supplies, clothing, and electronics.
While the tax holiday primarily targets back-to-school shoppers, its appeal extends to all consumers looking to save on a variety of exempted items, from diapers and printer ink to art supplies and more.
