GADSDEN, AL — The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees has approved Chancellor Jimmy H. Baker’s recommendation to appoint Alan Smith as the permanent president of Gadsden State Community College. The decision was made during the board’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 9.
Smith has served as interim president since June 1, stepping into the role following the departure of Dr. Kathy Murphy, who is now president at Wallace Community College in Dothan.
Smith brings a long-standing connection to Gadsden State, beginning his journey with the college more than 35 years ago as a student. “My connection to this college spans more than 35 years when I began my education journey and has shaped who I am today. This is an incredible honor that I embrace with great enthusiasm,” Smith said.
A native of the area, Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business and Economics and a Master of Science in Education from Auburn University, as well as a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Alabama.
Smith began his career in education as an agriscience teacher at Hokes Bluff High School, where he taught for 11 years. He also taught at the Marshall County Technical School and the Etowah County Career Technical Center. Outside the classroom, Smith has worked in the private sector, operating construction and cabinet-making businesses.
In 2017, Smith joined Gadsden State as an adjunct instructor. He was appointed Dean of Workforce Development in 2019 and later became Vice President of Capital Projects, Community Relations, and Workforce Development in December 2024.
Gadsden State serves Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, and St. Clair counties across five campuses or educational centers. According to Lightcast, a global labor market analytics firm, the college contributes $270.5 million in economic impact to its service areas and supports more than 4,400 jobs.
Smith’s appointment as president becomes effective August 1, 2025.
