ALDOT Unveils Pedestrian Safety Enhancements for Jacksonville State Campus and Downtown Jacksonville

ALDOT Announces Pedestrian Safety Improvements on Jacksonville State Campus and in Downtown Jacksonville

Jacksonville, AL – Announced January 8th for the purpose to enhance safety for both pedestrians and motorists, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has revealed plans for significant changes on the Jacksonville State University campus and in the heart of downtown Jacksonville.

On-Campus Pedestrian Improvements

A major component of the initiative involves extensive sidewalk additions along State Route 204 on the Jacksonville State University campus. This strategic move aims to create a safer and more accessible environment for students and faculty navigating the area. Additionally, a small median featuring a designated “buffer zone” will be implemented to enhance safety for pedestrians crossing State Route 21.

Downtown Jacksonville Square Transformation

Downtown Jacksonville’s iconic square is set to undergo a transformation with the modification of existing pedestrian crosswalks. The objective is to optimize visibility for both pedestrians and motorists, fostering a safer environment for all. Plans also include the construction of a raised separation between traffic on SR-21 and the parking spaces in front of businesses lining the square.

This announcement follows a year-long planning process that engaged various stakeholders, including ALDOT, Jacksonville State University, and City of Jacksonville officials. The collaborative effort aimed to address the pressing need for improved pedestrian safety and traffic flow amid the growing volumes of foot and vehicular traffic.

To ensure community engagement and gather valuable public input, ALDOT is organizing a public involvement meeting on February 15 at 4:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the City of Jacksonville’s Public Safety Complex. Residents, students, and stakeholders are encouraged to attend, providing an opportunity to voice opinions, concerns, and suggestions regarding the proposed changes.

The estimated cost for these comprehensive improvements is approximately $3 million. A portion of the on-campus work will be supported by an ALDOT Transportation Alternative Program grant, with both Jacksonville State University and the City of Jacksonville jointly contributing a $200 thousand match to leverage an additional $800 thousand in federal funding. ALDOT will cover all remaining expenses to ensure the successful implementation of these crucial safety enhancements.

As ALDOT prioritizes the safety and efficiency of pedestrian movements and traffic, these planned improvements underscore a commitment to creating a secure and accessible environment for the Jacksonville community.
