ALEA Increases Patrols, Urges Safe Driving Ahead of Thanksgiving Travel Surge

Keep the Roads Safe so Everyone can Give Thanks this Holiday Season

Montgomery, AL – As families prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is urging motorists to make safety a priority amid what is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods of the year.Heavier-than-usual roadway traffic is anticipated statewide, partly due to increased highway travel following recent airline disruptions connected to the federal government shutdown.

To keep holiday travel safe, ALEA has already increased its highway patrol presence. Throughout the extended weekend, all available Troopers and specialized units will be actively patrolling Alabama’s roadways to reduce crashes, deter unsafe behavior, and support safe travel for residents and visitors.

“This time of year is about spending time with loved ones,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “We are asking every driver to commit to safe decisions behind the wheel. When you choose to slow down, stay alert, buckle up, and never drive impaired, you help protect not only your own family but every family traveling Alabama’s highways.”

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has also announced that no temporary lane closures will be permitted on interstate routes from Wednesday, Nov. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 30. The agency says the pause is intended to minimize congestion and protect both motorists and road crews during one of the year’s heaviest traffic periods.

Safety Priorities for Thanksgiving Travel

ALEA Troopers will focus on four high-risk behaviors known to contribute to serious crashes:

1. Distracted Driving

With vehicles often filled with family members, luggage, and holiday items, ALEA is reminding drivers to limit distractions by securing children and belongings before driving, assigning a passenger to handle phones or navigation, and avoiding texting or scrolling while behind the wheel.

2. Impaired Driving

Troopers will enforce a zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving throughout the weekend. ALEA encourages motorists to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, arranging a safe ride home, and reporting suspected impaired drivers to 911.

3. Aggressive Driving

Holiday congestion can lead to speeding, tailgating, and other aggressive behaviors. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, follow posted speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and avoid road rage.

4. Seat Belt Use

ALEA continues to emphasize that seat belts remain one of the most effective tools for preventing serious injury. Drivers and passengers are encouraged to buckle up on every trip and ensure children are properly secured in appropriate car seats or boosters.

Statewide Enforcement Effort

Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety, emphasized the agency’s commitment to roadway safety.

“Our mission remains constant and vital: Keeping our highways safe so every family in Alabama can arrive safely to their destination and give thanks together,” Archer said. “There will be zero tolerance for aggressive and dangerous driving behaviors. Our job is to enforce the laws of the State of Alabama in order to prevent crashes and save lives. However, our mission is maximized when we have the support of the motoring public. We can all do our part to make the roadways safer for everyone who travels this holiday season.”
