MONTGOMERY — As Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer travel, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has launched its annual “101 Days of Summer Safety” campaign aimed at reducing accidents and saving lives across Alabama’s highways, waterways and beaches through Labor Day.
The statewide initiative comes as millions of Americans prepare for holiday travel and summer activities. This year’s campaign also coincides with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, with ALEA officials emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility and public safety during the busy travel season.
According to ALEA, increased enforcement efforts will take place throughout the summer. Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol Troopers will conduct enhanced patrols, while the agency’s Rescue Swimmer Detail will once again operate along Alabama’s Gulf Coast beaches to assist with emergency response and water rescues during peak travel periods.
Hal Taylor said the campaign is focused on helping families safely enjoy summer activities across the state.
“Summer in Alabama is about making memories with family and friends, whether that’s on the road, on the water or at the beach,” Taylor said. “As we celebrate America’s 250th year, we are reminding everyone that safety is a shared responsibility.”
ALEA reported that during the 2025 Memorial Day holiday travel period, traffic fatalities decreased by 50 percent compared to the previous year, while the state recorded zero boating fatalities during the holiday period. Agency officials said they hope to continue that trend throughout the 2026 summer season.
The campaign launch follows ALEA’s participation in the Second Annual Southern States for Safe Boating Press Conference, where marine law enforcement agencies from Gulf Coast states highlighted water safety efforts during National Safe Boating Week.
Throughout the summer, ALEA plans to promote safety awareness through educational outreach, public awareness events, coordinated messaging and enforcement initiatives.
The agency also released several summer safety reminders for motorists and boaters.
For drivers, ALEA encourages travelers to wear seat belts, avoid distracted and impaired driving, obey speed limits, move over for emergency vehicles and ensure children are secured in appropriate car seats.
For boaters, officials recommend wearing properly fitted life jackets, checking weather conditions before travel, filing float plans, keeping safety equipment onboard and avoiding boating under the influence.
“Whether you’re traveling Alabama’s highways, enjoying our lakes or spending time on the Gulf Coast, one decision can save a life,” Taylor said. “This summer, let’s honor our nation’s legacy by looking out for one another and making sure everyone makes it home safely.”
Additional safety information and updates are available through ALEA’s official website and the agency’s social media platforms.
