ALEA Launches Fifth Annual “Think Smart Before You Start Spring Break” Campaign

ALEA -- Spring Break Safety 2025

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has officially launched its fifth annual “Think Smart Before You Start Spring Break” campaign, a statewide initiative aimed at ensuring safety and promoting responsible decision-making during the busy spring break season. The campaign particularly targets teens and college students, encouraging them to prioritize safety while traveling and enjoying their time off.

As part of this proactive effort, ALEA will increase patrols on Alabama’s roadways to promote safe travel. With thousands heading to the state’s beaches and vacation hotspots, ALEA Troopers will focus on enforcing traffic laws, monitoring seat belt usage, and curbing dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

“Spring break is a time for fun and relaxation, but it is crucial that we remember safety should always be a top priority,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “We are reminding drivers, especially young drivers, to think smart before they hit the road. Whether you’re traveling to your destination or spending time at the beach, we want to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable spring break.”

In addition to roadway enforcement, ALEA is continuing its efforts to enhance beach safety. For the fourth consecutive year, ALEA’s Aviation Unit will conduct the “Rescue Swimmer Detail,” a program that rapidly deploys lifeguards from the cities of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores to swimmers in distress.

This year, thanks to additional funding secured by Senator Chris Elliott in 2024, the initiative will not only operate during peak spring break periods but also whenever strong rip currents are forecasted throughout the spring and summer months. These expanded efforts ensure swift response times to potential emergencies along Alabama’s coastline.

“Rescue swimmers, along with our Aviation Unit, are ready to act quickly in the event of an emergency,” said Lt. Jeremy Burkett, Director of ALEA’s Administrative Bureau. “With the Gulf Coast’s beautiful but sometimes unpredictable waters, we encourage everyone to swim safely and heed all posted warnings. However, if you find yourself in trouble, we’ll be there as fast as we can.”

ALEA is urging all citizens to take responsibility for their safety both on the road and at the beach. The agency has provided essential safety tips to help ensure a safe and enjoyable spring break experience:

  • Buckle Up for Safety: Seat belts save lives, no matter how short the trip.
  • Speeding Isn’t Worth the Risk: Drive at the posted speed limit and remain aware of road conditions.
  • Avoid Distracted Driving: Put the phone down and focus on the road.
  • Never Drive Under the Influence: Use a designated driver or ride-share service if consuming alcohol or other impairing substances.
  • Plan Ahead, Stay Safe: Always inform someone of your travel plans and whereabouts.
  • Know Your Limits at the Beach: Stay hydrated, swim with a buddy, and follow lifeguard instructions.

With strategic planning and responsible decision-making, ALEA hopes to ensure a safe and successful spring break for all Alabama residents and visitors.

An ALEA representative stated that ALEA remains dedicated to public safety through proactive traffic enforcement, crime prevention, and emergency response. The agency’s professionals work tirelessly to protect citizens across Alabama, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can enjoy a secure and memorable spring break season.
