Montgomery, AL – As neighborhoods across Alabama prepare for a night of fright and fun, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is reminding parents, guardians, and motorists to make safety a top priority this Halloween. With increased pedestrian traffic, excited trick-or-treaters, and community celebrations, ALEA’s mission is to help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable evening.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor emphasized the agency’s year-round commitment to protecting families, saying, “We are committed to protecting Alabama families year-round, but especially on nights like Halloween, when excitement can sometimes overshadow caution. By planning ahead, staying alert and using safety tools, we can ensure a safe and memorable evening for everyone.”
Key Halloween Safety Tips
For Parents and Trick-or-Treaters:
-
Plan your route ahead of time, choosing well-lit areas and using sidewalks whenever possible.
-
Stay visible by adding reflective tape to costumes or carrying glow sticks and flashlights.
-
Travel in groups, and ensure young children are always accompanied by an adult.
-
Check all treats and discard any unsealed or suspicious items before eating.
For Motorists:
-
Stay alert and slow down—children may dart into the street unexpectedly.
-
Avoid distractions such as texting or using a phone while driving.
-
Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
ALEA also encourages families to use the Alabama Sex Offender Registry, a free public resource that allows users to search by name, address, or location. Parents can use this tool to make informed decisions about safe trick-or-treating routes. The registry is available at www.alea.gov.
