ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division Hosts Annual Boating Basics and License Courses

2024 Spring Boating Course Schedule

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division is once again offering its highly anticipated Boating Basics and License Courses across the state’s northern and central districts. This annual initiative provides valuable hands-on training and essential information on local water bodies, ensuring the safety and knowledge of citizens navigating these areas.

The free Boating Basics classes present a unique opportunity for participants to engage with local ALEA Troopers, gaining insights into critical issues relevant to the waterways frequently visited by residents in the area. The interactive nature of these courses fosters a deeper understanding of boating safety, regulations, and responsible practices.

Upon successful completion of the Boating Basics course, participants will receive a certificate by mail. ALEA Troopers will submit the individual’s information to the Agency’s Driver License Division, where the vessel class will be added to their Alabama Driver License. It is important to note that it may take up to 10 business days before individuals can go online to alabamadl.alea.gov or visit their nearest county probate office to purchase their updated Alabama Driver License.

For those eager to enroll in the courses, the current schedule can be accessed here. To obtain more information or secure a spot in a class, interested individuals are encouraged to contact the Marine Patrol Instructor via the email provided on the schedule.

It’s important to highlight that children aged 12 or older are eligible for a vessel operator’s license through these courses. However, they must be 14 years old to operate a vessel alone. The courses not only offer essential knowledge for safe boating but also contribute to fostering responsible and informed water recreation practices.

Enrollment in the Boating Basics and License Courses involves a one-time application fee of $5 (cash only), with an additional $36.25 issuance fee for the license. ALEA remains dedicated to promoting boating safety and education, ensuring that Alabama’s waterways are enjoyed responsibly and securely by all residents.
