On September 1, 2021 at approximately 7:00 pm the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of Pelham Lane in Alexandria to respond to an 11 month old child that fell into a sewer. Upon arrival Deputies located the father and unresponsive child. They also saw the father had already begun CPR and rescue attempt. The child was transported to RMC where he succumbed to his injuries.
During the course of the investigation, investigators learned that the father had gone to a friends house to do some work on a vehicle and brought his son. While the father was working on the car the child was playing with other children at the house. The child was running in the backyard when he fell into a septic tank after the plastic cover gave way. A short time later the father went to look for his son when he made the horrible discovery. The father was extremely distraught and very cooperative with deputies and rescue personnel throughout the incident.
Sheriff Matthew Wade said “This appears to be a tragic accident that every parent fears.” The investigation is still ongoing, but that is due to procedures in place for any death, no criminal charges have been filed or are pending.
