Alexandria falls in close 1A-4A semifinal with defending champion Tallassee but dominates Deshler for third place.
BIRMINGHAM — Alexandria’s boys finished third in the Class 1A-4A state duals championships Friday, falling to defending champion Tallassee 34-26 in the semifinals then beating Deshler 59-18 in the consolation match.
Tallassee beat Oak Grove 42-30 in the finals.
The third-place finish was Alexandria’s highest in the state duals. There were no consolation matches when the Valley Cubs reached 1A-5A the semifinals in 2020.
“I think we didn’t wrestle to our abilities with Tallassee and made some costly errors,” Alexandria coach Frank Hartzog said, “but bounced back against Deshler.”
Against Tallassee, Alexandria got pins from Jeremy Lambert (122) and Jaden Whittaker (146). Ryker Houston (128) won by technical fall, and the Valley Cubs got decisions from Hudson Hartzog (134), Johnathan Santos (140) and Ethan Maxwell (177).
Alexandria rebounded against Deshler, getting pins from Houston, Hartzog, Santos, Whittaker, Nehemiah Brewster (192) and Owen Cromer (217). Lambert, Kion Guy (159), Christian Jones (167) and Maxwell won by technical fall. Dion Guy (152) won by decision.
