Southside, AL – Alexandria senior reaches 1,000 career points as Valley Cubs advance; Oxford, Jacksonville girls also victorious in area-tourney openers
Jordyn Walker passed 1,000 career points, and Alexandria downed Lincoln 72-23 in the Class 5A, Area 12 tournament Tuesday. The Valley Cubs will play host Southside in Friday’s 6 p.m. championship game, and they earned a spot in next week’s sub-regional round. Walker finished with 21 points, including hitting nine of 12 free throws. Jill Cockrell hit four 3-pointers on the way to 16 points.
OXFORD 77, FORT PAYNE 50: Justice Woods poured in 21 points, hitting two 3-pointers, as Oxford overcame a slow start to advance in Class 6A, Area 13.
The Yellow Jackets, reigning 6A state runners-up, clinched a spot in the sub-regional round and will play host Gadsden City in Thursday’s 6 p.m. championship game.
Fresh off of crossing the 1,000-career-point threshold, Xai Whitfield added 12 points on Tuesday, and LaMya McGrue scored 15.
JaMea Gaston hit a team-high 3-pointer and added nine points.
JACKSONVILLE 53, WHITE PLAINS 44: In Class 4A, Area 10, Alexis Phillips led three Jacksonville players in double figures with 14 points. DeAsia Prothro added 13 and Neveah Nicholson 11.
Jacksonville advanced to Friday’s 6 p.m. area championship game against host Cherokee County. The Golden Eagles also punched their ticket to the sub-regional round.
White Plains hit nine 3-pointers Tuesday, led by Braeton Moran’s four on the way to 14 points. Cooper Martin hit three and scored 11 points. [read more…]
