Alabama Power customers stay safe and warm while enjoying snow brought by Winter Storm Cora

Anniston, AL – Winter Storm Cora swept through Alabama this past weekend, bringing a rare winter wonderland and a significant impact on power services across the state. Residents of Anniston joined thousands of Alabamians in enjoying snowball fights, sledding, and building snowmen as snow blanketed the area. However, the storm also caused widespread power outages that tested the resilience of local infrastructure and emergency response teams.

The storm entered Alabama Power’s service territory at 7 p.m. on Thursday, lingering until 10 p.m. on Friday. Over its duration, approximately 33,500 customers experienced power outages. Anniston, along with Tuscaloosa and Fayette, was among the areas hardest hit by the icy conditions and strong winds.

Alabama Power’s swift response mitigated much of the storm’s potential disruption. Crews braved hazardous conditions to restore power, achieving remarkable milestones:

  • 90% of customers had power restored by 8 p.m. on Friday, even before the storm had fully moved out of the area.
  • 95% of outages were resolved by midnight on Friday.
  • The remaining customers saw their power restored by Saturday morning.

Advanced automation technology also played a crucial role. Alabama Power’s self-healing infrastructure restored power to 4,622 customers who might otherwise have faced extended outages, underscoring the company’s investment in reliable and resilient systems.

The coordinated efforts before and during the storm reflect Alabama Power’s commitment to ensuring safety and service continuity. In Anniston, residents praised the speed of the response, noting the dedication of lineworkers who tackled icy roads and freezing temperatures to restore power.

While Winter Storm Cora brought challenges, it also provided an opportunity for the community to come together, creating lasting memories of rare Alabama snowfall. With the support of advanced technology and a dedicated workforce, Anniston and surrounding areas weathered the storm with minimal disruption.

As temperatures return to normal, the community is grateful for both the beauty of the snow and the reliability of the services that helped them enjoy it safely.
