Anniston Awarded $1.8 Million in State Transportation Funding Through Rebuild Alabama Program

Anniston Road Grant

ANNISTON, AL — The City of Anniston has been awarded $1,865,084.49 in state transportation funding to support roadway and pedestrian improvements along Quintard Avenue (State Route 21) at 10th and 11th Streets, as part of a broader statewide infrastructure investment announced Wednesday by Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The funding is part of more than $40 million awarded statewide through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II), which supports locally significant projects on the state highway system. In total, 25 projects across Alabama were selected for funding in this award cycle.

Anniston’s project will extend left-turn lanes on SR-21 at both 10th and 11th Streets and add new crosswalks designed to improve pedestrian safety, traffic flow, and overall efficiency along one of the city’s most heavily traveled corridors. The project also includes a required local contribution of $382,115.21, bringing the total investment to $2,247,199.70.

ATRIP-II is funded through the Rebuild Alabama Act, which requires the program to set aside a minimum of $30 million annually from ALDOT’s share of new gas tax revenue for projects of local interest. Since its creation in 2019, ATRIP-II has distributed more than $260 million in state transportation funds.

Governor Ivey highlighted the long-term impact of Rebuild Alabama during her recent State of the State address, noting that the program has generated more than $2 billion since 2019 and supported approximately 500 road and bridge projects in all 67 counties.

State officials noted that Governor Ivey has awarded approximately $40 million in ATRIP-II grants each year for the past five years, exceeding the program’s minimum funding requirement. While local matching funds are not required under ATRIP-II, 20 of the 25 projects selected statewide included local contributions totaling more than $11 million.

Projects were selected by the ATRIP-II Committee established under the Rebuild Alabama Act. All awarded projects must move forward within two years of funding approval, with several expected to be under contract during the 2026 fiscal year. Additional information regarding construction timelines and traffic impacts for the Anniston project will be released as the project advances into design and implementation.
