Anniston, AL – The city of Anniston held the regular scheduled work session and city council meeting on January 7th, 2024.

Work Session

 

The Anniston City Council convened for a work session and meeting to discuss pressing matters, including financial reimbursements, storm shelter grants, and updates on city projects.

  1. Cash Reimbursement
    The council discussed approving a reimbursement of $195.64 to Shaquilla Garlington from the Municipal Court Department. This expense covered her attendance at CLE Training in Montgomery on December 6, 2024.
  2. Storm Shelter Grant Authorization
    The council discussed authorizing Fire Chief Jeff Waldrep to sign all relevant documents related to storm shelter grants from Calhoun County Emergency Management Agency (CCEMA), Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), and FEMA. The initiative includes plans for four new storm shelters, one for each ward, in collaboration with local schools and community centers to expedite the project.
  3. City Manager Updates
    City Manager Steven Folks provided updates on key projects:
  • Demolition on Moore Avenue: Structures at 1108 and 1116 Moore Avenue are set for removal in February. The cleared area may be considered for future developments, such as a food truck park or other community enhancements.
  • New City Hall Transition: The current City Hall will close on January 30-31 to facilitate the move to the new facility, opening on February 3. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 8:00 AM on opening day. The first council meeting in the new building is scheduled for mid-February.

Additional Discussions

  • The council explored extending Main Street to include more small buildings and potentially connecting downtown to 14th Street to boost community access and commercial growth.
  • The potential for using adjacent properties for food truck parks and trails was also discussed, highlighting ongoing efforts to create inviting public spaces.

 

 

City Council Meeting

 

 

  • The Anniston City Council convened for its regular meeting on January 7, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The session began with an invocation by Council Member Demetric D. Roberts, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. All council members, including Mayor Jack Draper and Ward representatives Lewis Downing, Ciara Smith, Millie Harris, and Demetric D. Roberts, were present.

    Key Agenda Items:

    1. Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the December 17, 2024, meeting were reviewed and unanimously approved.
    2. Adoption of Agenda: The agenda for the meeting was adopted without any additions or deletions.
    3. Consent Agenda:
      • A resolution authorizing reimbursement to city officials for travel expenses was approved.
      • Fire Chief Jeff Waldrep was granted the authority to sign documents related to storm shelter grants on behalf of the City of Anniston with the Calhoun County EMA, Alabama EMA, and FEMA.

    Additional Notes:

    • There were no public comments or additional matters brought before the council during the session.
    • Council members highlighted the importance of precautions during the ongoing cold weather, including leaving water running to prevent pipe freezing and staying informed about facility closures.

    The council entered an executive session to discuss personnel matters and trade negotiations. It was noted that no further actions or discussions would take place following the session, and the meeting adjourned from there.
