ANNISTON, AL — Anniston Museums and Gardens will host guided tours of the McClellan German Italian POW Cemetery and former camp site in early March, offering participants an opportunity to learn more about a unique chapter of local and World War II history.
The program, titled “McClellan German Italian POW Cemetery and Camp Tours,” is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 at 12 p.m. and Saturday, March 7 at 9 a.m. The outdoor walking tours will be led by Berman Museum docent and VA representative Tom Gilbert.
According to event information, the tour will guide attendees through the German Italian POW Cemetery and highlight remaining elements of the former prisoner-of-war camp at Fort McClellan. Participants will learn about World War II prisoners once housed at the installation and the site’s connection to the surrounding community.
Fort McClellan played a role in the broader network of POW camps established across the United States during World War II. The cemetery stands as a historical reminder of that period and of the individuals who were detained there.
Organizers note that the program is free to attend, though pre-registration is encouraged. As the tour takes place outdoors, attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the weather.
The event is open to the public.
