Anniston, AL – Anniston Police Chief Nick Bowles has been appointed Chairman of the Calhoun Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), a key body responsible for transportation planning in the region. Bowles brings a wealth of leadership experience to his new role, where he will help guide decisions that shape the future of local transportation systems.
The Calhoun Area MPO operates under the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission. Since its establishment in 1984, the MPO has worked collaboratively with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to oversee transportation planning efforts for the Calhoun Urbanized Area. This process adheres to the “3 C” principle—comprehensive, cooperative, and continuous—mandated by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1962.
The MPO’s responsibilities include developing transportation plans that address current and future needs, engaging with the public to ensure community input, and prioritizing projects to improve regional connectivity. These efforts are vital to supporting growth and enhancing mobility for residents and businesses across the region.
Chief Bowles expressed his commitment to fostering collaboration and advancing the region’s transportation priorities, noting the importance of infrastructure in improving quality of life and promoting economic development.
As Chairman, Bowles will lead the MPO in addressing challenges such as traffic congestion, safety, and sustainability, working with stakeholders to create a more efficient and accessible transportation network for the Calhoun Urbanized Area.
