Anniston, AL – The Anniston Police Department recently welcomed two new officers, Jalon Lewis and Tristan Cochran, in a ceremony attended by family, friends, and community members. The event marked the beginning of their journey in law enforcement and highlighted the support and dedication required for the role.

The ceremony began with expressions of gratitude for the families and supporters of the new officers. Chief Bowles acknowledged the challenges faced by law enforcement today, emphasizing the importance of community support and the commitment needed to serve effectively.

Chief Bowles also discussed the evolving nature of the law enforcement profession, noting the increased social pressures and the impact of negative incidents involving police officers nationwide. Despite these challenges, the new officers were commended for their dedication and desire to serve their community.

The training process for new recruits was outlined, including the initial orientation and preparation period, followed by three and a half months at the police academy. This rigorous training includes both classroom instruction and practical exercises, preparing the officers for the realities of law enforcement work. Upon completion of the academy, the new officers will undergo further on-the-job training with experienced Field Training Officers (FTOs) to ensure they are fully prepared for solo patrol duties.

Families were reminded of the importance of supporting their loved ones throughout their training and career. Chief Bowles encouraged open communication and seeking support from clergy or peers when needed, acknowledging the emotional and psychological toll that law enforcement work can take.

The swearing-in ceremony concluded with the new officers taking their oaths, affirming their commitment to uphold the laws and serve the community with integrity. The event was followed by an opportunity for families to take photos and tour the police department, gaining insight into the environment where their loved ones will work.

The ceremony highlighted the Anniston Police Department’s dedication to fostering a supportive and well-trained police force, ready to serve and protect the community.
