Anniston, AL – At approximately 2:05 pm the Anniston Police Department responded to a possible shot fired call at the High School. The High School reported that they were in the process of reentering the school from an earlier hoax bomb threat when someone heard what sounded like a firecracker and they again evacuated the school and awaited police.
Anniston police officers were able to locate one student with a very minor injury who also initially refused medical transport. During the initial investigation they were able to learn that a student may have negligently discharged a firearm that was concealed in a backpack. According to Chief Nick Bowles, “At this time it appears that when the gun discharged the round struck the ground and may have broken apart. We’re not sure if the victim was struck by some of the floor or a piece of the actual bullet when it broke apart.” The victim may have gone to the hospital afterwards but not want to be transported by ambulance.
Anniston investigators are still working on the information they have gathered at the scene but do not believe this was a targeted attack against any student. There have been no arrests made at this time, but investigators are confident that they will identify and locate the person responsible.
