Anniston, AL Ranked as Most Affordable City in U.S. for Pet Parents; New Report

Anniston, AL – Local pet owners in Anniston, Alabama can breathe a little easier amid rising national pet care costs, as the city ranks third most affordable in the country for pet parenthood, according to comprehensive new research from Rover, the world’s largest online marketplace for pet care.

Rover’s sixth annual True Cost of Pet Parenthood Report, backed by extensive data collection, research, and insights from real pet parents, reveals that while pet parents across America face steep price increases—with veterinary fees up 11%, pet cleaning supplies surging 183%, and treats and chews rising 85%—Anniston residents enjoy significantly lower costs compared to expensive metropolitan areas like Manhattan, New York, and San Francisco.

Rover’s Comprehensive Research Reveals Anniston’s Advantage

Through detailed analysis of cost of living data, pet insurance rates, veterinary fees, and local service costs, Rover’s research team ranked cities nationwide for pet affordability. The comprehensive study places Anniston behind only Parsons, Kansas, and Lawton, Oklahoma, in the full breakdown of expenses across the most and least affordable cities for pet parents.

This cost advantage is particularly meaningful given Rover’s findings that the average lifetime care reaches substantial levels nationally. The research found that a 10-year-old dog costs approximately $34,550 over its lifetime, while a 16-year-old cat averages $32,170.

Rover’s survey of 1,000 pet parents across the United States uncovered compelling data about the financial pressures facing pet families nationwide. The research revealed that more than a quarter (28%) of pet parents admit they are worried about being able to afford the things their pet needs right now, while half (52%) are concerned that tariffs will further increase the cost of having a pet.

“Working with pet parents on a daily basis, two things are clear: people are concerned about the high and rising costs of pet parenthood, and pet parents continue to be unwavering in their commitment to their furry family members,” said Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, Rover Pet People Panelist and Owner of the Kleinburg Veterinary Hospital.

Rover’s Data Shows Regional Cost Disparities

The company’s extensive data collection methodology incorporated multiple sources, including cost of living data from the Economic Research Institute, Rover’s own pet boarding services, insurance providers like Spot and Lemonade, real estate data from Zillow, local veterinary clinics, emergency clinics, and average supply costs to create the most comprehensive picture of pet ownership expenses by location.

Rover’s research found that pet-related costs vary dramatically depending on location, with Anniston offering significant savings compared to the least affordable cities in their analysis, which include Manhattan, San Francisco, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Seattle.

Cost Changes from Last Year Impact All Markets

According to Rover’s year-over-year analysis, pet parents can expect costs to rise significantly in 2025. The research team documented that dog parents can expect costs to rise as much as 7%, while cat care expenses have climbed 10%. These increases affect even affordable markets like Anniston, though the baseline costs remain much lower.

Rover’s data reveals that 31% of pet parents agree the cost of pet items seems to be increasing more than other household or personal care items, with nearly half (48%) of pet parents concerned about the rising cost of pet care over their pet’s lifetime.

Survey Insights Reveal Spending Behaviors

The company’s survey data uncovered fascinating insights into how pet parents manage expenses. Rover found that 69% of pet parents report that pet food and treats take up the majority of their budget, while one in three (33%) pet parents have reduced spending in other areas of their life—such as groceries and entertainment—to ensure they could afford their pets’ needs.

Perhaps most telling, Rover’s research revealed that a third (34%) of pet parents say pet spending is one of the last categories they would cut if budgets were tight, demonstrating the unwavering commitment pet parents have to their animals despite financial pressures.

Positive News for New Pet Adopters

Despite rising ongoing costs, Rover’s data collection revealed positive trends for prospective pet owners. The research found that adoption costs have decreased significantly, with dog adoption fees down 19% and cat adoption costs down 16% from 2024. This decrease, combined with Anniston’s favorable cost environment, creates opportunities for local families considering pet adoption.

Rover’s Research Methodology Ensures Accuracy

The True Cost of Pet Parenthood Report was developed through Rover’s comprehensive research process conducted in March 2025, with survey data collected from 1,000 U.S.-based pet parents in February 2025 via Pollfish. The company determined the most expensive and affordable cities based on multiple factors including office visit costs, emergency visit fees, adoption fees, licensing fees, and cost of living indices.

As Rover’s data shows pet ownership remaining strong—with 20% of pet parents adding new pets in 2024 and 33% considering adoption within the next year—Anniston’s position as the third most affordable city in their comprehensive analysis provides significant advantages for current and prospective pet owners navigating an increasingly expensive landscape.

The full report and complete breakdown of expenses, including detailed city rankings and cost projections, demonstrates why data-driven research like Rover’s True Cost of Pet Parenthood Report has become an essential resource for pet parents planning their family budgets.
