Anniston, AL – Two outstanding high school seniors from East Alabama have been selected as the recipients of the prestigious Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship, a cash award sponsored by the Anniston Runners Club. The scholarship, tailored for school cross-country and track & field team members, recognizes academic excellence and extracurricular involvement in both service and athletics.
This year’s deserving recipients are Cameron Wilson and Estella Connell, both of whom will each receive a $700 scholarship as part of the Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship.
Estella Connell, a graduating senior at the Donoho School in Anniston, has showcased her talent and commitment through eight years of participation in the track & field team. Additionally, Connell excels in varsity volleyball and has shown remarkable initiative as the founder of Grands and Gadgets, a service organization dedicated to assisting senior citizens with technology needs. She is set to pursue her studies in a healthcare-related field at Samford University in Homewood.
Cameron Wilson, a graduating senior at Central High School of Clay County, has demonstrated exceptional leadership as a member of the varsity cross country and track & field teams, serving as team captain during his junior and senior seasons. Beyond athletics, Wilson is actively engaged in his community, serving as the editor of the school’s yearbook and volunteering with organizations such as FCCLA and the Clay County Arts League. He plans to further his education at Southern Union State Community College in the fall.
Established in 2017, the Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Suzy Spiceland Michelson, a beloved librarian at Constantine Elementary School and an avid marathon runner who passed away in 2016. As a tribute to Michelson’s legacy, the Anniston Runners Club, of which she was a member, sponsors the scholarship annually to support promising scholar athletes in the East Alabama area. This year’s scholarship was also made possible through contributions from the Treadhoofalon event at Camp McClellan Horse Trails.
The Anniston Runners Club is dedicated to promoting a positive running culture among youth and supporting aspiring athletes in realizing their full potential. Their mission underscores the immense health benefits of running while providing mentorship and guidance to young athletes in pursuit of their dreams.
The Suzy Spiceland Michelson Memorial Scholarship continues to serve as a beacon of encouragement and support for student athletes in East Alabama, honoring the memory of a remarkable individual while nurturing the aspirations of future generations.
