Anniston, AL – The Anniston community will gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of Dr. Robert L. Satcher Sr., Ph.D., a distinguished educator, civil rights advocate, and former President of Saint Paul’s College. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Mount Liberty Baptist Church, 851 Morrisville Road, Anniston, AL.
Dr. Satcher, who passed away on December 31, 2024, at the age of 87, leaves behind a legacy marked by academic achievement, civic leadership, and unwavering dedication to equality. A native of Anniston, Dr. Satcher’s academic journey began in his hometown and culminated in a Ph.D. from Oregon State University, followed by postdoctoral work at renowned institutions such as MIT and Princeton.
A veteran of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Satcher participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma Voter Registration March, showcasing his commitment to justice and equity. He served in leadership roles at several historically Black colleges and universities, including Fisk University, Voorhees College, and Hampton University, and made significant contributions to science education in Uganda under the U.S. AID program.
Dr. Satcher’s memorial in Anniston will also highlight his connection to the city and his role as a mentor to generations of students and community members. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Anna Satcher Scholarship Fund, which supports educational opportunities for local students. Contributions can be made through Mt.
