Anniston, AL – On Saturday, February 25th, the Anniston Berman Museum came alive with the vibrant colors, rich traditions, and joyful festivities of the Chinese New Year. Also known as Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, this widely celebrated occasion resonates not only in China but also in various countries with a significant Chinese population and ancestry, including South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, and beyond. The Berman Museum embraced the spirit of the Year of the Dragon with a captivating event featuring Lion Dance performances by the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu from Atlanta, Georgia, among other delightful activities.
The Chinese New Year celebration at the Berman Museum was a lively and culturally immersive experience, capturing the essence of a tradition that spans thousands of years. Guests had the opportunity to indulge in the symbolic richness of the festivities, from the energetic Lion Dance performances to delectable food samples, dragon-themed crafts, engaging games, and more.
Pre-registration was encouraged for the event, ensuring that each session was limited to 75 guests, creating an intimate and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees. The second session was a sold-out event.Visitors eagerly gathered to partake in the festivities and learn about the significance of the Year of the Dragon.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the Lion Dance performances by the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu. Before the mesmerizing dance began, Shifu Gary Mitchell took the audience on a journey through the history of the Lion Dance. Originally performed every night of the first fifteen days of the Lunar New Year, the dance holds profound meaning. It is believed to expel evil spirits and usher in good luck for the upcoming year. The drum, an integral part of the performance, symbolizes the heartbeat of the lion, adding a rhythmic and symbolic layer to the dance.
