ANNISTON, AL — The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Information & Referral Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will host a specialized education program in Anniston for individuals recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
The APDA Parkinson’s Good Start Program is scheduled for Friday, May 15, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tyler Center – Anniston Regional Medical Center. The program is free to attend, though registration is required.
Designed for individuals within three years of a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, along with their care partners and family members, the program aims to provide education and support during the early stages of the condition. Organizers say early access to information can help participants better understand and manage the disease.
The program will cover a range of topics, including an overview of Parkinson’s disease, treatment options, care team coordination, and the role of rehabilitation and exercise. Attendees will also receive guidance on medication management, coping strategies, and available community resources.
“A Parkinson’s diagnosis can be overwhelming,” said Brooklyn White, program coordinator at the APDA Information & Referral Center at UAB. “Many people may be confused, anxious, and unsure about where to begin. APDA is here to empower them, helping them learn more about the condition and the steps they can take to live their best lives.”
The session will be led by Parkinson’s disease specialists, including advanced practitioner Laura Lieb from the UAB Comprehensive Center of Movement Disorders. Local physical, occupational, and speech therapists will also participate in the program.
According to APDA, a new Parkinson’s disease diagnosis occurs approximately every six minutes, highlighting the growing need for education and support services.
The APDA Information & Referral Center at UAB provides a variety of programs, educational resources, and support services for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease across Alabama.
