When Marcus Herbert had to leave his dream job through no fault of his own in 2020, he didn’t know when the chance to become a head coach again would come around. He was hopeful, but you just never know.

Opportunity knocked earlier this month and Herbert answered.

The former Weaver head coach was approved Monday night to become the head basketball coach of the boys program at B.B. Comer.

When his two-year run at Weaver, his alma mater, ended due to the county’s eligibility prerequisite for coaches, he spent a year as an assistant coach for current Glencoe coach Ryan Chambless at Rome (Ga.). Most recently he was the eighth-grade coach at Oxford.

“That was really the only (head coaching) opportunity that came about,” Herbert said. “This was mentioned to me a couple weeks ago. I prayed about it, discussed it with some of my mentors, talked to my wife about it and thought it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. They’ve got a really good nucleus of talent coming back.

“To be honest, I didn’t know how long it would take (to get another head coaching position). I know what’s in the area, I knew a lot of people and where they were. I always thought there’d be a chance away from here, I just didn’t know when. It’s all God’s plan. He just had a path for me and I just following His lead.”

Herbert cut his teeth as a head coach at Weaver, succeeding his coach and mentor Daryl Hamby. He also coached track and football before having to give up all three positions due to a county policy requiring all coaches to be certified teachers; he was a para pro.

He got the job a week before the 2019 season opener and enjoyed a 19-10 first season with a senior-laden roster. Rebuilding, the team won six games this past season and was out a few months later.

He returned to the lead chair briefly in 2020 when Chambless was quarantined for COVID and guided the Wolves to three wins in Cleburne County’s holiday tournament.  [*** read more]
