Southside, AL – Southside girls top Alexandria to win 5A, Area 12 title under first-year coach; Cherokee County rolls past Jacksonville in 4A, Area 10 final

Southside’s girls did their part to complete history Friday. Graceanne Rose scored 10 points, and the Panthers held Alexandria to six first-half points en route to a 42-33 victory in the Class 5A, Area 12 championship game.

With the victory, Southside earned a home subregional shot against Area 11 runner-up Moody on Monday at 6 p.m. They also completed and Area 12 championship sweep for the school’s boys’ and girls’ teams, believed to be a first, Southside coach Justin Bowen said. Southside also reached 21-7 on the season.

“I am just so proud of our girls,” said Bowen, and Alexandria graduate. “They have worked so hard since I got the job in May. This is my first time being a head coach, and they have made my job an easy one. “They show up early in the mornings and shoot before school or workout together as a team. They pour in everything they have every practice, and to see it pay off for them means the world to me.”

Alexandria’s six first-half points came on two Jordyn Walker 3-pointers, one in the first quarter and one in the second. She scored a game-high 18 points. Alexandria will play its subregional game at Area 11 champion Springville on Monday at 6 p.m. [read more…]
