Anniston, AL – Garrett and Garrett Jr. shoot final-round 64 to win ACC Parent-Child by 3

For the first time in quite a while Garrett Burgess was playing in a team event in which his partner was the one with the sore shoulders – and he was an 11-year-old.

Burgess and son Garrett Jr. won the annual Parent-Child Tournament at Anniston Country Club Sunday and it was the junior partner who hit some of the biggest shots of the day.

Team Burgess shot a final-round 64 for a two-day total 129 that was three shots better than first-day leader and defending champion Gary and Peyton Wigington and 19-and-over flight winner Jeremy and T.J. McGatha for the overall win.

The winners got their round going with three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine, with Garrett Jr. making birdies at 13 and 15. He also made an eagle at 1, driving the green from his tees to 18 feet, a birdie at 2 and a needed par on 9. Dad felt he had to catch up, making birdies at 16 and 3.

“If he wouldn’t have played very well there’s no way we could have won, that’s for sure,” the elder Burgess said. “And he let me know about it. He was like, ‘come on, come on.’ He was pepping me up, getting me to hone in a little bit. It’s nice to be able to lean on somebody, there’s no doubt.”

According to dad, young Garrett, who turns 12 in July and will be entering the sixth grade at Iola Roberts Elementary School in Pell City in the fall, has put a lot of work into his game the last couple months. He still needs a year or two of development before he can be the low man in the living room, but dad is fully aware that day is getting closer.

“I’m sure he’s got an inkling now that if he gets a few things taken care of he’s going to be wearing me out,” Garrett said.

The Wigingtons shot a final-round 70. Peyton had a birdie on 3 and Gary dropped one on 14.

The McGathas won their flight by two over Cypress and Noah Hathorn. They shot a final-round 68 with T.J. contributing a birdie at 9 and a par at 18 and Jeremy dropping birdies on 6 and 11.  [*** read more sports stories]
