Calhoun County Blue Line Foundation Hosts Weekend of Community Unity and Support for First Responders

Calhoun County, AL –  The Calhoun County Blue Line Foundation brought the community together this past weekend in a powerful demonstration of support for local law enforcement and fire departments. From aircraft fly-ins to chili-filled competition, the back-to-back events created a memorable celebration of public service, partnership, and community pride.

The weekend kicked off Friday afternoon at the Anniston Regional Airport, where the Pregame Kickoff event drew a steady crowd. Visitors explored food vendors, enjoyed music, entered raffles, and got an up-close look at aircraft on display. One of the most anticipated moments came early, when Survival Flight made a dramatic landing just before 2:30 p.m., creating a striking moment for those arriving early to capture photos or stream the arrival live. Throughout the evening, guests mingled with law enforcement officers in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere designed to connect citizens and those who serve them.

Serving as emcee for the event was Anniston Mayor Ciara Smith, whose remarks welcomed attendees and helped set the tone for the evening. Agencies in attendance included the Anniston Police Department, Oxford Police Department, Oxford Fire Department, Anniston Fire Department, Piedmont Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, White Plains Volunteer Fire Department, Weaver Police Department, Weaver Volunteer Fire Department, Jacksonville Fire Department, Ohatchee Police Department, Weaver Police Department, and Survival Flight. Their presence added a deeply personal connection for attendees, showcasing the diversity of departments serving Calhoun County.

On Saturday, attention turned to the Smoke Eaters Chili Challenge, hosted at the Jacksonville Community Center, where more than 15 chili entries competed for top honors. Guests sampled the entries for just $10 at the door, with 100% of proceeds supporting Calhoun County first responders. The event was filled with energy as citizens, officers, and firefighters came together over shared meals and friendly competition.

Judging the official contest were Jacksonville Council President Tony Taylor, Anniston Assistant Fire Chief Brandon Connell, and Oxford Police Sergeant Jeremy McCorkle. The competition was close, ultimately requiring a tiebreaker vote cast by Calhoun County Commission Chairman Terry Howell.

When all was said and done, Darlene Berta of the Anniston Police Department was awarded first place. David Bell of the Jacksonville Fire Department took second, and John Benvides of the Weaver Police Department came in third. Christina Kupek from the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department was named the crowd favorite, a testament to her flavorful recipe and community appeal.

A standout moment occurred when Senator Keith Kelley reclaimed the traveling trophy from Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson, who represented the previous year’s winning agency. Senator Kelley then presented it to this year’s champion, Anniston PD’s Darlene Berta. He also offered a heartfelt tribute to Anniston Fire Chief Jeff Waldrep, who passed away earlier this year, honoring his years of service and leadership.

The success of both events was made possible thanks to the generosity of local sponsors and businesses. Anniston Aviation served as the primary sponsor of the Pregame Kickoff. Additional support came from Milo’s, the Calhoun County Commission, Tractor Supply, J&M Midway, AOD, Anniston Walmart, Oxford Walmart, City Councilman Lewis Downing, Kona Ice, Sound Solutions, and Christian Corner Meats.

Love Photography, a sponsor of the event, played a special role by capturing moments throughout the weekend. Full photo galleries from both the Pregame Kickoff and Chili Cook-Off are now available at the bottom of this article and will also be shared on the Calhoun County Blue Line Foundation’s social media and website, allowing the community to relive the highlights and share in the memories.
