Held at the Calhoun County Board of Education, the meeting lasted from 11:06 AM to 11:42 AM, with a focus on community involvement, student achievement, and strategic planning for the future.

The meeting began with an opening prayer led by Mr. Tittle, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The board chair expressed gratitude for the attendance of board members and the community, setting a positive tone for the session. In a lighthearted moment, the chair humorously referenced a previous conversation during a recent trip to Africa, challenging Mr. Webb to maintain the efficient pace set at the last meeting.

Student of the Month

A key highlight of the meeting was the recognition of Kyle, a student from Pleasant Valley, as the TCI Student of the Month. Mr. Mark Propper introduced Kyle, praising him for his exceptional accomplishments in building construction, electrical education, and athletics. Kyle has also earned certifications in skid steer, excavator, and bulldozer operation. The board presented him with a $50 gift card in recognition of his hard work and dedication to his studies and extracurricular activities.

Special Education Director of the Year

Angela Bonds, the Special Education Director for Calhoun County, was honored as the Special Education Director of the Year by the Alabama Council of Administrators in Special Education (ALACASE). Ms. Bonds, who has dedicated 37 years to education, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of her team and the importance of supporting the diverse needs of students in the district.

Financial Report

Mr. Godwin, the district’s chief school financial officer, presented a financial report for January 2025, revealing a healthy balance sheet with cash and cash equivalents totaling approximately $59.8 million. He outlined various revenue sources, including property tax and sales tax, noting a slight increase from the previous year. The board discussed the district’s financial health and future expenditures, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to support ongoing educational initiatives.

Consent Agenda

The consent agenda, which included the approval of minutes from the previous meeting and a list of surplus items, was approved unanimously following a motion by Mr. Leathers and seconded by Mr. Mange.

Superintendent’s Action Items

Summer School Approval

The board approved the establishment of summer school for 2025, with dates and locations to be determined in collaboration with school principals. The initiative is designed to support student success, especially in credit recovery for high school students.

Appointment of Architects

The board approved the appointment of Ward Scott Morris as the architect for upcoming school improvement projects. Additionally, McKee and Associates were appointed to assist with similar tasks, ensuring that district facilities continue to meet the evolving needs of students and staff.

Technology Roofing Bid

The board awarded the technology roofing bid to GLK Companies for $233,627. This investment underscores the district’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading its facilities to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for students.

Bus Driver Salary Increase

In recognition of the critical role bus drivers play in the education system, the board approved an increase in the hourly wage for bus drivers conducting extra trips from $9 to $15 per hour. This decision reflects the board’s commitment to ensuring fair compensation for staff and acknowledging their contributions to the district.

New Categories and Contracts

The board also approved the addition of an electrician category to the technology salary schedule, recognizing the essential role of electricians within the IT department. A new contract for the public relations coordinator was approved, acknowledging the success she has brought in increasing student enrollment and fostering community engagement.

Personnel Changes

The board reviewed several personnel changes, including six retirements, four resignations, two transfers, and six new hires. Among the new hires, Mr. Marcus Herbert was introduced as the new head basketball coach at Pleasant Valley High School. His community connections and coaching experience were highlighted, and he was welcomed by the board with enthusiasm.

The board chair opened the floor for additional remarks from board members. Mr. Gilbert and Ms. Smith were recognized for their exemplary handling of recent incidents at local schools, demonstrating the dedication of staff to student safety and well-being.

The meeting took a somber turn as the board acknowledged the passing of long-time member Lonnie Higginbotham. The board extended heartfelt condolences to his family, honoring his contributions to the Calhoun County educational system.
