Calhoun County Chamber and Visitor’s Center Hosts Inaugural State of Agriculture/Tomato Luncheon at Oxford Civic Center

OXFORD, AL – The Oxford Civic Center welcomed more than 120 farmers, agriculture professionals, and students on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, for the first State of Agriculture/Tomato Luncheon. The event marked an expansion of the Calhoun County Area Chamber and Visitor’s Center’s traditional agriculture gathering, which has previously been held at the Chamber office.

The program featured speakers from across the agricultural and conservation sectors, with Rick Pate, Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, delivering keynote remarks. Other presenters included local, state, and federal leaders representing farming, conservation, and industry development.

Jakob Williamson, public affairs coordinator of the Calhoun County Area Chamber of Commerce, explained that the luncheon was designed to build upon the Chamber’s annual tradition. He credited Jennifer Hudson of the Choccolocco Creek Watershed for helping transform the event into its new format.

“We have done this for a few years now, and this year Jennifer had the idea to have a tomato sandwich luncheon along with what we regularly do,” Williamson said. “She has done a fantastic job.”

The expanded venue also provided an opportunity for student involvement. FFA and 4-H members participated in the event, while Calhoun County Career Tech culinary students prepared pastries and assisted with the lunch service.

Oxford Mayor Alton Craft opened the program, offering welcoming remarks and highlighting the importance of student participation. “It makes a mayor proud to see all these young people involved like this,” Craft said. Speakers throughout the event also shared lighthearted stories about their appreciation for the luncheon’s centerpiece: tomato sandwiches.

The event drew broad support from local farmers, conservation groups, and community organizations, with attendees recognizing the luncheon as a platform to celebrate agriculture’s impact on the region while engaging the next generation of leaders in the field.
