    • Two speakers from the Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention spoke. They currently have an ongoing event called Recovery Rocks! This program has residents of Calhoun County searching for numbered rocks hidden around the county. Once found, the rocks can be turned in for prizes. This game ends on November 30th.  They also spoke about the Drug Take Back program that will be starting next month. They will enter all participants into a raffle for any old or unused prescription drugs that are turned in.
    • Myles Chamblee from the Calhoun County EMA spoke about the increase of COVID numbers in the county. There are currently 69 patients in the RMC COVID unit (as of the meeting – numbers are subject to change). There are also an additional 13 waiting for a bed. Stringfellow has opened a COVID unit that will hold 12. Eight from RMC have been transferred there. Statewide the number of COVID cases are going down, but this downward trend is not showing in Calhoun County at this time. The current numbers in Calhoun County are as high as they were in January of 2021. This increase in numbers are creating other issues such as delayed emergency response. It is taking longer for patients to be off loaded at the local hospitals which is reducing the number of ambulances available to respond to emergency calls. He encouraged continued use of masks, social distancing, hand-washing, vaccinations, and wearing of masks.
    • Audrey Maxwell of the Calhoun Chamber of Commerce spoke on several issues. She first introduced a new Intern, Jannette. Jannette is a Masters student at JSU and is originally from Columbia. She is a welcome addition to the Chamber family. Audrey also spoke about the new tourism brochure that is coming out and the revised website that will be available for viewing next month. She mentioned the Golf  Tournament being held on 9/16 and the October Business Expo event and the Business Awards happening in November. The deadline to nominate is ending on Friday, September 10, 2021.
    • Susan Patterson, wife of Commissioner and said she is enjoying it as well.  Lee Patterson, was present as well. She was congratulated on her retirement.
