Calhoun County Commission Holds Meeting on February 27, 2025

Commission Meeting

Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Commission convened for its regular meeting on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Vice Chair Terry Howell presided over the meeting in the absence of Commissioner Henderson. All items on the agenda were voted on and passed unanimously.

The meeting opened with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. Commissioner Fred Wilson then presented a proclamation in honor of Black History Month to Reverend Anthony Cook. In his remarks, Reverend Cook expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that although he works tirelessly for the community without seeking acknowledgment, he was deeply appreciative of the Calhoun County Commission’s acknowledgment of his efforts. He also took the opportunity to thank God for all the blessings he has received in his work.

The Commission moved on to approve the meeting agenda and minutes from the previous meeting. During the Elected Official/Department Head comments section, no further remarks were made.

Application

Old Business:

The Commission addressed several nuisance abatements and dismissals. A total of six nuisance abatements were considered, including properties on W. Jefferson Street, Old Birmingham Hwy., Alabama Highway 202, Whites Gap Road, S. Corning Street, and Folsom Street. The Commission also considered one nuisance dismissal for a property on Parkwood Drive in Anniston.

New Business:

The meeting then shifted to new business, with the Commission reviewing multiple nuisance declarations. The affected properties included locations on Four Mile Road in Jacksonville, Oak Road and Tiffany Lane in Anniston and Ohatchee, Cherokee Trail in Anniston, Comanche Trail in Anniston, and 48th Street in Anniston.

Additional items included a bid extension resolution for grass cutting and maintenance for parks, as well as a surplus property resolution authorizing the sale of a Sheriff’s Office Econoline Van. The Commission also considered the acceptance of two subdivisions, Deerfield Phase II and Deerfield Phase III, along with an employment contract for a new maintenance supervisor.

The Commission also reviewed two AIA change orders related to the ARPA Project for the Jail Medical Wing, one from Tindall and another from Hale. These items were also passed.

Board Appointments:

In a series of board appointments, the Commission reappointed individuals to several positions, including the 911 District Board (District 2) and the Calhoun County Water Authority (Districts 4 and 5). Two expiring terms on the McClellan Development Authority Board were filled with the appointments of Van Roberts Sr. and Jessica Leonard.

Public Comments:

The only public comment came from Jakob Williamson, who reminded attendees about upcoming meetings and other county matters.

The meeting adjourned after all agenda items were addressed.

The next Calhoun County Commission meeting will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
