The first presentation honored the Alabama Law Enforcement Appreciation Foundation (ALEAF) as part of Law Enforcement Week. The commission presented a check to ALEAF to support their ongoing work in recognizing and uplifting law enforcement officers throughout the region. The funds will contribute to meals and recognition events for officers across Calhoun County.
“I want to thank the commission for their unwavering support,” said Henry Mullinax from ALEAF. “These efforts show our officers that the community stands behind them, reminding them that they are valued and appreciated.”
Immediately following, the Choccolocco Heritage Foundation received a $10,000 check for the restoration of a historic schoolhouse in Old Choccolocco. Georgia Calhoun, representing the foundation, shared the vision of reviving the building for community events and educational use. The contribution marked a milestone in their fundraising efforts, which exceeded their initial $10,000 goal.
“We want to preserve and honor our history,” said Georgia Calhoun, a key advocate for the project. “This building has housed generations of our community and holds immense historical significance.”
Commissioner Danny Shears applauded both efforts, stating, “It’s about building a future while honoring our past. Investing in these projects means investing in our community’s fabric.”
Beyond the presentations, the commission moved efficiently through a range of agenda items. They unanimously adopted the agenda and minutes from the previous meeting. Under old business, the commission approved several nuisance abatements and dismissals for properties in Anniston and Piedmont. New business brought forward additional nuisance declarations and approvals for related invoices.
Other significant actions included:
-
Approval of an agreement with Fresenius Kidney Care for inmate health services at the county jail.
-
Adoption of an Administrative Policy and Procedures Resolution.
-
Passage of a resolution supporting the Cane Creek Community Gardens Grant, aimed at fostering local gardening and community involvement.
-
A board appointment to the Water Authority for District 2.
Commissioners concluded the meeting by encouraging residents to stay involved and attend future meetings to stay informed on local initiatives.
The next Calhoun County Commission meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Community members are encouraged to attend and participate.
