Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Commission held its final meeting of the year on Thursday, December 19, 2024, marking the occasion with special recognitions and a robust agenda addressing community improvements and administrative matters.
Alabama Power Foundation Good Roots Grant
The Commission received a notable contribution from the Alabama Power Foundation to enhance local parks. Jacki Lowry, representing Alabama Power, presented the Good Roots Grant, which will fund tree-planting initiatives across several parks. This project aims to beautify public spaces, improve environmental health, and foster community pride.
Honoring Pleasant Valley High School Volleyball Team
Commissioner Lee Patterson led a proclamation ceremony to honor the Pleasant Valley High School Volleyball Team, celebrating their second consecutive state championship. Team members were presented with Certificates of Achievement.
The Commission addressed a range of topics, ensuring progress on community standards and infrastructure projects:
Nuisance Properties
Actions included:
- Abatements Approved: Properties in Anniston, Piedmont, and Alexandria.
- Dismissals Approved: Locations on Saks Road, Rockview Circle, and others.
- Invoices Approved: Costs for nuisance remediation totaled between $2,026 and $4,526.
New Nuisance Declarations
Seven properties were newly declared nuisances, including locations on Bynum Leatherwood Road and Parkwood Drive.
Other Approvals
The Commission also moved forward with key projects and agreements:
- Bid Awards: Contracts for printing services, pest control, and debris removal.
- Infrastructure Projects: Agreements for bridge replacements on West 64th Street and Mitchellville Road, as well as resurfacing Old Gadsden Highway.
- Grant Application: Funding for signage along the Chief Ladiga Trail.
- Workforce Expansion: Employment contract approved for a new Information Technology Manager.
The Commission adopted the 2024 holiday schedule and appointed Amanda Young and Fred Wilson to the Calhoun County Community Punishment and Corrections Board.
