Calhoun County, AL –When a new gardener wants the answer to what they should invest in first? My answer is, “Garden Pottery”. Whether the gardener lives in a condo with only balcony space, or a gated community with restrictions in digging & planting, the answer is Garden Pottery. Many farmers lease large plots of land during their retirement years and reduce in ground gardening. Having a large selection of pottery in various sizes, colors and weather resistant is a savvy first investment decision. Many of my personal zone 7 plants that are perennials survive inside my pottery, outdoors. An example is my twin whiskey barrels that for several years have lovely early summer exotic lilies (Forever Susan’s & El Desperado’s) blooming. These whiskey barrels are great options for pottery. Also I plant summer ornamental grasses inside pottery, which survive blackberry winters. A gardener can use wheels on rolling casters and place pottery so the pots can be moved around a deck easily. Many gardeners plant tropicals in pots so they can bring indoors those pots to safely winterize the plants. I have a garden theme, Country Cottage Rustic. I buy pottery colors in muted tones, copper tints, mustard hues, glazed clay. However, If I see a bargain price I will buy 6 pink ceramic pots for half price. A gardener can spray paint and change the color of any pot. I use garden pottery for both vegetables and flowers to grow in. I always suggest to other gardeners to be sure your pottery has drain holes. The great news about investing in pottery is continuance usage, for years of enjoyment.
