Raelee Schuler, recent graduate of Ohatchee High School, and Katrina Jones, recent graduate of Saks High School, have graduated with not only their diploma, but also with a board-certified natural hair license. This license will allow them to go straight into the work force if they choose to.

Both of these ladies received their certification from Calhoun County Career Academy through the Cosmetology Department. We spoke with Sherry Laster to learn a little bit more about this program. Sherry Laster is a Jacksonville City Councilwoman, a local business owner, and an instructor with the Career Academy. She wanted to stress that this program is free other than a $40 initial fee and supplies.  The program is available to any high school student in the county. The program is paid for through the state and includes transportation from the high school. This program is available to tenth graders through seniors.
Once students graduate they have state certification that opens many doors. Both Katrina and Raelee have chosen to pursue college to further their education; however, Katrina will also be working in a natural hair salon in Anniston.

You can meet Raelee and Katrina at the Free Hair Cuts for Kids. This is an annual program offered by the Career Academy. Many students and local cosmologists participate. The program was not able to offer this service in 2020 due to COVID restrictions, but the previous year over 125 hair cuts were provided. This event is tentatively scheduled for July 26th. Please look for more information to be released about his event.
