Faith Christian boys get area victory over Wadley. Johnson powers White Plains boys past Cherokee County. Gooden’s big performance pushes Weaver boys past Cleburne County, and Brown’s big night lifts Cleburne County girls. Glencoe boys win a thriller.

HANDLEY — The Class 4A, Area 8 race in girls’ basketball just got more interesting.

Zanautika Smith led a balanced effort with 11 points, and Handley topped Anniston 44-33 to improve to 16-4 on the season.

Anniston (18-3) suffered its first loss to 4A competition this season. It’s other two losses came against 6A Parker and Pell City.

Handley got nine points apiece from Akia Brown and Takeriauna  Mosley, eight points with two 3-pointers from Kristiana Tucker and six points from Takeira Tucker.

The Tigers outscored Anniston 14-5 in the fourth quarter to take control.

A’Kayla Perry led Anniston with 14 points, including two 3-pointers.

CLEBURNE COUNTY 44, WEAVER 37: Cleburne County’s Faith Brown poured in 29 points, 23 in the second half, and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Cleburne County’s other top performers:

Hannah Turley: seven points, eight rebounds.

Weaver’s top performers:

Aaliyah Marks: 12 points (one 3-pointer).
Erionna Richmond: nine points.
D.J. Gibbs: eight points.

WOODLAND 50, PLEASANT VALLEY 42: Alexa Cranmer scored 15 points to pace Pleasant Valley, hitting one 3-pointer. She also blocked four shots.

Pleasant Valley’s other top performers:

Laney Robinson: 14 points (two 3-pointers).
Haylie Lee: nine points (one 3-pointer).


PLEASANT VALLEY 50, WOODLAND 24: Three players scored nine points apiece to pace Pleasant Valley, and the Raiders outscored Woodland 22-3 in the fourth quarter while improving to 7-6 and earning the right to play host to the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament.

Pleasant Valley’s top performers:

Hunter Sparks: nine points.
Braxton Salster: nine points.
Noah Johnson: nine points (three 3-pointers).
Jaden Sparks: nine points.

WHITE PLAINS 60, CHEROKEE COUNTY 36: Carter Johnson powered his way to 15 points in the post, and White Plains  (14-7) picked up a victory in Class 4A, Area 10 play.

White Plains’ other top performers:

Josh Wheeler: 12 points.
Coleman Ray: nine points (three 3-pointers).

Cherokee County’s top performers:

Jacob Cornejo: eight points (one 3-pointer).
Jayquan Diamond: eight points.

FAITH CHRISTIAN 51, WADLEY 39: In Class 1A, Area 8 play, Carson Harris hit two 3-pointers and led Faith Christian with 19 points.

Faith’s other top performers:

Conner Richerzhagen: 17 points.
Parker Robertson: eight points (one 3-pointer).
Eli Robinson: seven points.

WEAVER 67, CLEBURNE COUNTY 45: Weaver’s Kaden Gooden hit three 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points.

Weaver’s other top performers:

Gabe King: 11 points (one 3-pointer).
Harper Williams: 11 points (one 3-pointer).
Junior Allen: seven points (one 3-pointer).

Cleburne County’s top performers:

Jacob Cavender: nine points (three 3-pointers).
Nate Adams: eight points.
Grey Freeman: eight points.

GLENCOE 62, B.B. COMER 60: Wade Segrest’s layup at the buzzer won it for Glencoe. He finished with 10 points.
