WHITE PLAINS — Cassidy Arnold and Haylie Smith homered, and White Plains downed Anniston 19-1 in Friday’s first-round action of the Class 4A, Area 10 tournament.
Arnold went 2-for-2 with three runs and five RBIs, and Smith was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.
White Plains also got two triples, a double and four RBIs from Kannon Slaughter, who also pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts over three innings.
White Plains (26-14) advanced in the winners’ bracket and will face Jacksonville on Saturday at 10 a.m.
JACKSONVILLE 3, CHEROKEE COUNTY 0: Carli Fritts pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Jacksonville (13-14) advanced to the winners’ bracket.
Fritts, Dailyn Wood and Sara Kate Adams each had one of Jacksonville’s three hits, and Keelie Leach had the Golden Eagles’ lone RBI.
OXFORD SPLITS: Oxford (26-9) opened with an 18-0 victory over Gadsden City but fell into the elimination bracket with a 5-3 loss to Pell City in the Class 6A, Area 12 tourney at Choccolocco Park.
Reagan Sanders went 2-for-2 with two RBIs against Pell City, and Justice Woods had a triple and RBI, but Pell City took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Berkley Mooney pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and three earned runs with 12 strikeouts and five walks.
Against Gadsden City, Raina Zachery pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and hit a triple. Woods hit an inside-the-park grand slam, and Adajiah Wilson homered with three RBIs.
Regular season
ALEXANDRIA 23, PLEASANT VALLEY 6: The Valley Cubs (23-18) slammed four home runs in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Jill Cockrell, Lauren Weber, Pressley Slaton and Charlee Parris each homered. Slaton had five RBIs. Cockrell, Weber and Parris each had four.
Cockrell also hit a triple, and Parris had two doubles. Weber and Brenlee Sparks each hit a double as Alexandria pounded out 17 hits.
For Pleasant Valley (15-12), Lily Henry homered and drove in two runs, and Madyson Cromer had a double and RBI. Henry and Macey Roper had three hits apiece, and Emma Harvey had two.
OHATCHEE SPLITS: Ohatchee beat Jacksonville Christian 9-1 and lost to Woodland 6-5.
Against JCA, Hannah Fitch struck out five batters and allowed five hits in five innings. She and Alyssa Davis each had a hit and RBI, and Tabi Davidson doubled and scored two runs.
Woodland took the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth. Leah Williamson finished with two hits, including a solo homer, and McKenzie McCormick had two doubles and an RBI.
For Ohatchee (16-18), Whitney McFry had two hits, including a triple, with two RBIs. Hannah Fitch was 2-for-2 with a double, run and RBI, and Savannah Reaves doubled and scored a run. [read more sports stories…]
